Thanks Richard01, PCGS gives a discription on their site about PVC damage to a coin, how it is a chemical compisition in plastic to make coin holders. It says it can sometimes leach onto the coin and damage it. They recommend Mylar holders. Now that I have been messed over by PCGS on Two coins, why shouldn't I gamble on UGS.
Thanks--that is what I was thinking of. It does not...Just because my FB isn't low doesn't mean I cheat.... I've never said that....you just need to look the coin over good while you can still return it. The problem on your coin more than likely happened before it was slabbed---but it wasn't showing up or they missed it...that is why you should send it back and they will pay for their problem They are alright...but I wouldn't suggest them for long term storge. I'm sorry if this sounds mean.....but that is what EVER person feels when they get jiped....they want to get jipped some more I guess...mostly its newbes that don't read and just don't know.... UGS and SGS and any Co. other than NGC PCGS ANACS ICG shouldn't be trusted unless you can see them IN Person and hold them and grade them yourself. Untill you can do that I would NEVER suggest you buy from them. I don't have any hard feelings to UGS other than the fact that they tend to overgrade. Speedy
No that's not what it means - and you're mixing things up a bit. The saying is - buy the coin, not the slab. It doesn't have anything to do with ebay in particular. It applies in all cases. What it means is that when you buy a coin, you should disreagrd that grade on the slab and grade it yourself. In other words, if the slab says the coin is graded MS66 - and in your opinion the coin is only MS64 - then you should not pay more than an MS64 price for the coin. And that applies to a slab from any grading company including NGC, PCGS, ANACS & ICG - along with all the others. Yes, probably. But the material that caused the verdigris to form had to be on the coin before it was slabbed - there is no other way it could have gotten there. It was simply missed. You have had a rude awakening, but it is better to have it happen sooner than later. But all you have actually learned is that even the better grading companies make mistakes. Well, they all do. They may not make this kind very often but it happens. But that is why they have a guarantee. Send the coins back to the grading company to have them honor the guarantee. Call them first to make sure you understand the proceedure.
Now I gotcha! Duh...... Don't buy the slab, buy the coin! That makes sense and I will practice that. I e-mailed the sellers from Ebay to share my dissapointment. The seller of the Penny says that it is a thin copper layer and some of the zinc is showing through. Is that the case? I will always have lessons to learn. A quick funny story goes back about 8 years ago when my wife and I went to a very large Fleamarket in town, we had the Redbook of coin prices in hand and felt we could not lose. We went over to one of the four coin stands there and started our hunt. Well lookie thar a ONE POUND silver eagle! At silver weight alone with the current price per oz. There was no way we could...........lose? About a week later while sitting on my couch, looking over my coin, I looked at the edge of the coin and found ONE TROY POUND. After I learned what a TROY POUND was, I had a new outlook on my knowledge of coins. I just wonder why I can't come out with a RUJAM POUND. I just wish I could buy 10 slabbed coins and have all 10 turn out to be what they say they are. So far I have gotten a few that could grade even higher, but those a few and far between.
OK here is another one for you more senior members: Startign to se emore and more coins offered on ebay and bidz from PCC Premier Certified Coins. Only found a couple of mentions of them and the site that was supposed to be theirs won't open in my browser. One site that dealt with grading companies siad PCC is not a third party grader. Buyer grades his/her own? Just curious of any detailed examination of their merchandise or dealings with them.
PCC isn't a good grading Co...again...I'm sure you can find good coins in their slabs but I would never suggest a newbe buy one of theirs....not untill they can grade and know enough not to get ripped off. Speedy
Hi, I don't think I saw anything mentioned on this. Some coins will deteriorate in the slabs. Older slabs are not airtight and you can practically whistle through some of them. An MS-69 coin may have been OK when it was placed in the slab. It may not be an MS-69 coin today. I worry about buying slabs on Ebay because someone (the seller) who can take a real close look at the coin can see if there is anything that is changing on the coin that would lessen the grade. I am not saying that some folks don't just make a mistake but it could just be a convenient way to sell coins that are now in a slab that is graded too high. Someone could get MS-69 money for an MS-63 coin. It is also possible that a coin is so changed by PVC damage from a prior holder or corrosion that it can't even be graded anymore. I would only buy raw coins from an Ebay seller with a great return policy. I would only buy slabbed coins when I can hold the slab in my hand and check out the coin myself. Just some thoughts, Bill
n.g.c..coins Hi Speedy It is all ways enjoyable for me to read what you have to say. You are very knowledgeable about coins and are collecting hobby. As for me I would never buy a coin sight-un-seen unless it was from n.g. c. . I would rather pay more and get a good grade of ms-69 . Then get a grade of ms-69 but it is a ms-65 coin.
What's the problem? Silver, like all precious metals, is always priced in troy ounces, which are slightly heavier than the avoirdupois ounces that other things are measured in. Or did you mentally multiply the silver price by 16 instead of 12?
Thank you for the nice words....I woudln't know what I know now if it hadn't been for the guys on this forum! I agree NGC is hard on grading and I would have less of a problem buying sight-un-seen but I still like to see my coins! Yes...the MS69 ASE are nice...I have bought a few and they are always nice to look at. The next big think I like about ASE are the errors you can find!!...I've found 2-3 Strike Thou....they are neat...and add a little value too! Speedy
