The coin was drilled or punched to wear around the neck. People who do this will also polish it to make it look better.</p><p><br /></p><p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Now having said that it still can be real. Such problems as this happend during the early Bust production. Remember these coins were produced on a screw press. There have been books written about the Bust half dollars. They didn&#039;t use a master hub. Whatever engraver cut the die left his own style on the coin. This gave a tremendous number of varieties.</p><p><br /></p><p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I don&#039;t recall this being a coin and date that has been know to have been counterfeited. I would say that the piece is real based on what you said and the photo&#039;s you added.</p><p><br /></p><p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Hope this helps you understand why it may seem a little strange to you.
