    Looks like it could either be a die chip or a plating bubble.

    It's a filled die break. Some of the oldtimers call it a "plugged die". I have the same year (1983) with that break. They might have been struck by the same die.

    The spot on the reverse is just a coincidence. Don't look too hard. You might see some camels running through the mirage.

    Whenever I see someone rely on coincidence I am reminded of a quote, which I believe was attributed to anonymous, ; coincidence is nothing but a lame excuse for the intellectually lazy!
