Meow thinks it is environmental damage. Would it not be more penny like in color if the clad layer is missing? And on your dime the high spots don't have the same color.

That's because light is hitting the surface,I see no environmental dmg on this coin besides natural patina in my personal opinion

Light hitting the surface has nothing to do with it, and some planchets just happen to be rolled slightly thinner (or slightly thicker) than others.

Here is my Kennedy missing the clad layer that @furryfrog02 asked me to show you. I'm sure you've seen it before.

Do you see any light-colored surfaces on it?

The clad layer is a sheetbof foil. As the blanks are punched out, it will be pulled over the edge. It isn't the same around the edge because of the burring that occurs. Sometimes you can't even see it in areas.

I wouldn't toss it if it was mine. IMO it's not missing a clad layer as it looks nothing like the coin shown by @cpm9ball or any of the missing clad layer coins frequently shown by @paddyman98. Your coin looks like it's toned because the reddish color is on both sides.

I found it in a $100 Mixed P&D bag. The Mint released these bags in 2004 and sold them for $135. So, I paid 68c for the coin. NGC slabbed it as one of my membership "freebies".

Later date, lower relief, lower pressure strike needed to bring up the lower relief and thus the rims aren't as high.

    Environmental damage.

Sorry, but your dime is stained/etc.
    (aka: environmentally damaged surfaces)

It is not missing the outer clad layer.

It weighs close to a normal clad dime,
so how could it be missing one of the outer
    clad layers?

An outer clad layer dime weights 1.9 grains.
Subtract that from the normal weight of a dime.

Typo? I come up with 5.8 grains.
