Is this damage or an error?

This is an 1873 IHC. The top of the D in United is broken. Is this a known error?

    It is damage. Sorry.

Are you sure about that, or are you just guessing?

    OP,

It is not damage to the coin itself, but isn't really an "error" either; it is a known anomaly that appears on some, I believe "closed 3" IIRC, coins of this date. There is certainly someone here, a collector of the series, who could better explain.

    Then you are surely wrong.

    Try again.

    Per Snow:

"A new hub was used for many dies this year. The difference ... the most distinctive difference is the broken D in UNITED."

A book is a wonderful reference.

For some, they make great paperweights, too!

Looks like a die break. That's a real error as far I know. lol

Not a die break. If it was, it would have given the polar opposite effect.

Broken hub. This same type broken D is also often seen on two cent pieces and half dimes. Sometimes on other denominations as well.

Thanks everyone for your input. I am going over my entire collection and I have a lot of questions. Hopefully, I won't wear out my welcome!
