28 grams 38 mm Is this 1794 8 reales real? Any help is appreciated thanks. EDIT: I rounded up, I like even numbers, more around 27.1-27.3ish, sorry for the inconvenience, made a mistake. Wasn't using the most precise scale (Non electrical) Can't tell the exact weight. Also posted a pic of the edge if that helps
I don't see anything wrong with it off hand, but I'm not a specialist, and these are very heavily faked. Get it checked out by someone who knows. Edit: Never mind, weight is bad. I should read the whole thread before replying sometime. Looks like a good fake in terms of design elements and such though.
Hmm, ok, if the weight is closer to 27.1g, it's probably fine. I'd see about weighing it more precisely, but 27.1 is probably well within tolerance. The bit about being heavily faked still applies. It looks good to me, but I'm not the one you want to be asking.
With the amount of wear (typically a loss of metal should occur in these coins), how could it weigh any more than cataloged?
27.03 is an average. Sometimes they start out a little overweight. And, wear doesn't actually remove very much metal until you get way down into the lower grades.
Here are some problems: 1. Most of the genuine coins DO NOT WEIGH 27.xx grams in spite of what the web site or the catalogues say. OTHERWISE, all the coins that weigh 26.xx are contemporary fakes that have become "acceptable" for long before any of our grandparents were born. 2. Due to the better "quality" of fake coins today (and these have been faked for decades - I have heard improving enough to be slabbed by TPGS) there is virtually NO WAY to determine if ANY COIN is authentic without highly magnified micrographs. You may wish to post your coin on Coin Community and wait for SwamperBob to give an opinion.
One of Bob Gurney's, aka swamperbob, key details to check for is the presence of two areas of the edge design where they overlap. They will appear 180 degrees opposite one another. See example picture.
This is a useful characteristic to look for as it helps weed out many crude copies. Unfortunately, "good" looking edges are found on deceptive C/F's also.
