Is this artificial or 'natural' toning on this Morgan? Please help

There have been literally thousands of threads on the subject and thousands of pictures posted. All anyone has to do is search through and read the material, it's all there.

Could one of the best ones get stickied? I think that would help a lot. Many readers never search on something like that, it would be great to have a primer at the top of a forum for people to refer to constantly.

The sarcasm in my post was meant to be a bit wry in reference to the fact that toning happens because of reaction between various elements. it all a reaction is a natural phenomenon

    .
I concur. this would be oh so helpful.. BTW I noticed there is a tone of people reading these threads all hours of the day and night.. seems really disproportionate to the number of posts

ILO of a sticky could you Bump the best one please?? too many to read.

Help is an understatement. It is the civic duty of every educated and seasoned coin pro do tthis! :thumb:

But there is no such thing as which one is best, it would require having at the least dozens of threads stickyed.

If you took the time to look, you would find that there have been at least a thousand threads where somebody or several somebodies have asked or requested to have a sticky put on some thread. You can't do it to all of them so we usually do it to none of them. If we did, you guys would have to click through dozens of pages just to get to the new threads.

edit - if you think there is too much to read then the knowledge that could be gained from that reading apparently isn't worth much to you.

I think thats a little harsh. I was simply asking for one thread that most would agree that could be a primer for people new to the discussion. You are right, there are many threads, but going through hundreds of pages of discussion like this, (which is frequently what toning threads change to), and not knowing who to listen to is a little much for a beginner. If I was told to do that, and get hundreds of multi paged posts, I think I would be more lost than when I began.

Point granted about too many stickies, its just this one topic seems to be overwhelmingly posted on and people not understanding.

Edit: How about posting a few of the best under the FAQ?

hmmmmm . reoccurring hot topics should be stickied.. (should I list the reasons?) you take them down when the thread is no longer active. or too contentious.. or what ever. You mod the hey of it when it goes off topic, encourage photo examples..

Refreshing hot topics to a stickied thread keeps the good stuff in the forefront. Keep it varied and it will bring more people back to check what is new.... but hey - I don't want to tell you how to moderate.. I dunno nothin bout dat.

    oh yes I do! :)

Why not make a poll Doug ask the peanut gallery.. be democratic... I'm feeling a little biased moderation going here. which of course you are entitled to. I am just saying...

I am just saying that now you really won't do it!

Tell ya what guys, you sit here for 8 years like I have and see how many requests for stickies you get. They you tell me how to deal with them. You would have so many sticky threads that it would be no different than we have now. Why ? Because you would still have to search through them all to find what you want. And there are literally thousands of them.

Do an advanced search, use toning as the key word and my name, GDJMSP, as the user name. You'll see what I mean. That alone produces 8 full pages of threads. How do you sticky that ?

Fair enough Doug, but is there one or two posts that could qualify for the FAQ? Then new members could be told just to search there. If there isn't just one, would someone want to write/compile one?

This is a highly charged emotional subject. Even within this thread, there are several areas, that many would argue on both sides. And some of the reasons are not backed with any scientific or organized research, or even double blind studies. A FAQ or Sticky must be totally correct and unbiased, based on research and documentation, not hearsay or just personal opinion. Doug is correct, IMO, to limit such.

OK, I was just thinking of something like showing coins that the author knows for a fact, (has seen or bought from person admitting they were AT), and show the telltale signs of what makes those different. Then some nice originally toned coins shown as well, with commentary why this toning appears natural, (maybe selecting slabbed coins or coins in a museum for 100 years). I wasn't thinking of something in the middle, where the debates can get out of hand.

Maybe its just a wishful dream, (post).

Have you ever read the FAQ ? You see anything in there to do with coins ?

My point is this - even if I felt inclined to do such a thing, where does it end ? How do I take the time to select this post or that post and put it in a special section for you, like you are asking now. And then not do the same thing for the next person when they ask us to do it for an entirely different subject ? There would never be an end to it. Like I have said - there have been literally thousands of such requests over the years.

It's kind of like people asking us to create additional sections for specialized subjects. This year alone I bet there have been at least 50 such requests. And each one of them feels that their request is very important. Now imagine what the Index page would like if there were 50 more sections. Then imagine what it would look like if we did that every year. Members would spend more time searching through the sections than they did reading. It would be rediculous.

The same thing happens with sticky threads, only it gets worse. Soon you have so many sticky threads that you can't find anything.

    That's what searches are for.

Ok, my bad I guess. I see posts about:

    1. To slab or not to slab
    2. 70 point Sheldon system
    3. Missing mintmarks
    4. Is my 1943 cent for real
    5. Mint Marks

Nope, no specific, commonly asked coin questions there! :)

This is the forum FAQ - http://www.cointalk.com/faq.php - you know that big link at the top of the page that says FAQ.

Ok, sorry, I thought "Frequently Asked Questions" meant FAQ. Could there be a post there someday, under Frequently Asked Questions, regarding toning someday please sir?

I'm sorry too, had no idea that's what you were talking about. Threw me off when you said FAQ. But to answer your question - by all means. You can post there anytime you want. I suspect there's several threads there about it already.

Thanks Doug, I was wrong too of course.

I am not an expert, though, of modern AT and how to tell. I just thought if one of these experts here wanted to try to write a definitive post I think it would help many new members, and maybe save a few unfortunate Ebay buys.
