I like this coin and thinking of buying it, but it looks to me to have a few more dings than I would expect graded MS64 by PCGS and I would prefer RD, this is of course - not! Any comments and opinions much appreciated:
Wear on an MS coin? I know they grade "cabinet worn" coins as MS, but I see no wear here. There is a minor planchet mark left, but not much more. I see nothing to make it less than a 64 unless the luster is just plain gone. And luster is difficult to read from most pictures and this is an example of how difficult it is.
Nice looking professionally graded coin. Without seeing the coin I can't comment on the grade except that it really doesn't show wear and a few dings. If the price is right I'd buy it.
The only ones I have owned have been circulated. That said, the coin looks worn to me too. It may be the normal luster for this date but Lincoln's entire head and bust looks "shiny" and I would have called this an AU grade.
I suspect the lighting and picture are not doing it sufficient justice. Just looking for one of these around MS64 but RD, hard to find with the caveat that I don't need it enough to pay "any" amount for one. This one came along and the pictures just does not say enough to me.
I'm OK with RB. I think it's a handsome coin. I'd be bidding it on the lower side of RB although I do like the eye-movement through it (i.e., no big distractions).
Reds for that coin are extremely rare since they all (nearly all?) got released. If I remember the story correctly, a lot of people were buying cigarettes to get them in Massachusetts.
I don't know enough for this coin though it is one that I have wanted to buy since 1976. Fond memory of discovering one in "the" coin shop in Great Falls, Montana. I have no recollection of the cost or quality of it, I don't think there were any pro-graded coins around, at least not in that area, at the time. So an RD would be a holy grail?
