Can anyone help me out? Found this dime while CRHing and have been trying to find out for a while whether it's an error or something else.
sure looks it.. could be a broadstrike if it larger than normal dime, or could be MAD, mis-aligned die, wait for others to chime in..
Guys a broadstrike should not have Reeding should it?? This dime appears to be readed, so was struck in collar. I'm leaning toward strike pressure or worn out dies as the culprit for this dime. I could be wrong..
Ah, more than i thought it would be actually. I might just try to sell/trade it then. Would much rather have silver instead.
And one more quick question about errors; Does NGC recognize doubling like this one (the part that says "Half Dollar") and do you guys think this coin would be worthwhile to send in?
So in reading the definition and comparing it to the picture, this would be an 'un-centered broadstrike' because of it being off-centered ? Yes.
Okay, this is not the place for a dissertation, but machine/strike doubling is when the die (basically) bounces between strikes. It is considered damage by most collectors, but some folks (think eBay) sell them for a lot. A doubleD die (remember that last d) is when the die is (basically) imparted with the image from the master die and is 'offset' so that 2 images are show. This is a true variety
I wrote up a thread a while ago on the different forms of doubling, and how to distinguish between them. Basically the stuff that Frank said, but with a little more in-depth description and photos. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/lets-talk-doubling.224087/
yes, and because there is no part of the design off the planchet as in an off centered error....coin below is an off centered error..just my opinion tho, could possibly be a mis aligned die as well, i just never seen one this strong,
