I have no idea about these variants either but the VAMworld.com link in this thread is a wealth of information regarding many variants with many pictures and helpful descriptions. Well worth looking at if you have many coins to look through.

Can get quite addictive and very time consuming. I am a member of the site and their experts helped me to attribute a Morgan and two peace dollars that I just couldn't pin down. All my others I attributed myself but it was a lengthy process

It’s all getting very addictive lol. I have had to stop CRH for now as I was going to banks twice a day and then constantly researching when I thought I had found something good. I’m trying to just stick to a couple types of coins that I can really research rather than trying to look into too many coins at once and getting confused. It really is a good website and well laid out so I’m happy you posted it as I can now research more about my Morgan’s and peace dollars to keep me busy. There’s so many variations I’m going to be busy for the foreseeable future I think lol.

I lack the expertise to comment but will be watching and have sent this thread to a VAM expert friend but don't know if he'll be available to comment.

Will keep my fingers crossed he can shed more light on the topic. All info so far has been great and any more would be much appreciated.

There are actually 4 different O mint marks. The largest is 1879 only. An oval O with a slit opening was used 1879-84, then again on a couple 1888-89 reverses, where it is scarce. The round O was used 1884-1904. The micro O was used on 1880, where it is not rare, and 1899, where it is harder to find, and rare in mint state. A micro O on 1896, 1900, 01, and 02 is one of the contemporary counterfeits, which are worth more than the real coins.
