My 9 year old Grandson surprised me with this for my B day last night. He had a bit of help I am sure.
Happy Birthday! & congrats on a really nice circulated piece from that era - imagine who's hands it passed through on its journey! Reminds me of the Aggie who was in the Olympics & won a gold medal in his event - he was so proud that he had it bronzed!!! (In other words, don't do it - it's perfect as is.)
TY Guys! Yea he is in 4th grade and starting book reports and such. I figured a story on where he thought this coin has been, Who's pocket and such would be a good report. It is only my second peace dollar I think he did good. He has not told me how much the local guy whacked him and his dad on it either.
Don't do it. Dipping would not improve its appearance or its value. It would only make it look, well, dipped. And, being a special gift, dipping would make it a bit less special.
Agree with the special gift thing which trumps all else. Also agree it isn’t a dipper but that’s because it’s to worn, it wouldn’t look right dipping a coin with that much circulation.
As there's no remaining luster, dipping it would just leave it looking uniformly dull silver. As-is, there's a bit of contrast between the fields and devices which makes it a bit more visually appealing.
Actually there is a bit of luster on the obverse. Enough to where I thought it may have been cleaned just my pics do not show it.
Great gift! I have given silver dollars as gifts many times, though I can not remember getting one for me that way since my grandmother gave me a cartwheel for my birthday when I was a little brat. That 9 year old grandson will probably be a big time collector as he grows up, and I bet he will have some of your coins in his collection.
Either leave it as is or give it an acetone bath followed by a hot water bath followed by a pat dry with a soft towel...or just leave it alone.
