Are you watching that Boob tube/ You tube again?
I wouldn't doubt that is where you figured you had an SMS.
That place is filled with the worst information from folks that don't have a clue themselves.
The coin you have is without a doubt a business strike Kennedy.

I will let your thread be, there will be plenty more folks to answer your question.
If you want the truth from folks, stick around here and stay away from the tube.

You don’t have one, let’s move on.

Nobody knows for sure. Yes, 1964 SMS coins did come from Eva Adams' estate...but that doesn't mean she possessed all of them. According to PCGS, there is believed to be 20-50 sets in existence. That's a pretty big range.

That being said, neither of the coins pictured in this thread are SMS coins.

That's sorta my point...there is no way to know how many sets actually exist. There is no proof that Eva Adams' had them all, no mint records of how many were made, and with cracking out and resubmitting over the years the known examples can be hard to track.

I don't think for one second that either coin here is an actual SMS coin. But, I think that your statement that "all of them are accounted for" isn't as certain as you make it sound.

I agree that it can be dangerous to use absolutes but think of the incredibly low probability of one of these coins being broken out of a slab, entered circulation, and then found by a new collector who happened to see a video on Youtube. If the OP had a plausible back story, such as a relative or family friend worked at the mint or was friends with Adams or another upper level mint employee, then maybe there is a small chance. But to find one in circulation? Never say never but I think I think I would have significantly better success buying scratch off lottery tickets to finance my retirement than I would have of finding a 64SMS in circulation.

Since the 64SMS has been widely publicized on the click bait you tube videos, it’s not surprising that new collectors think they found one. But the fact that there have been very, very few authenticated and they have come through known channels, not circulation means telling a newbie they don’t have one is being realistic.

I totally agree. The odds of finding one in circulation is basically zero. You're better off buying a Power Ball ticket. But, when someone says "all examples are accounted for" it's like talking about the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel. We know only 5 were made and all of them are well known and accounted for. The same cannot be said about the 1964 SMS coins.

It may be possible that there are a few sets left in collections.
Yet, we are talking about 26 years since they were first known.
I know that if I had a SMS set it would have been slabbed by now.
Especially since the combined coins would make an individual very wealthy.
This obviously goes to reason, but I hear your point.

Out of the ones that have been authenticated there is one that doesn't have the hanging down thing on the 4 in the date. Info is provided by PCGS.

Hi everyone, Just signed up to "coin talk". I am no expert by no means but, I have been collecting coins for most of my life... with help from my Grandfather....a few coins here, and there. A lot of them are from all over the world in the 40's 50's. Since then I have also received some from my father, and I am always taking an extra peak at my change with a loop. I find it interesting to come across errors! I recently bought a 1964 proof set. Was on the hunt for the accented hair kennedy but, not so lucky. However in that 1964 set, the Jefferson nickel is clearly a different finish from the rest of the coins. It's almost blinding...out of all the coins and errors I have, this is the first coin I have considered sending to a grading service. Any thoughts? I will try to get some pics tomorrow, right now my back feels broken lol
Look forward to learning a lot more here and meeting like minded people! =)
