I'd say it looks legitimate, based on the price I'd say someone got a good deal, and I agree the surface looks a little off. But I'd venture a guess that it's because it was scanned rather than photographed.
Well I'm not sure I agree. As a rule of thumb, stick to TPG's for high ticket items. But that's not to say people are out of their minds for not sticking to that. One would miss out on a ton of good deals if they only buy stabbed coins. Think about it... Someone has to be the one to submit the coins. Why not have that person be you?
I agree Jim. It almost looks like an acid wash to me. The coin supposedly was in a plastic holder (not slabbed) fopr protection. It came down through the family and recently put up for sale on E-Bay. It went for $ 710.00, so somebody took a chance.
Even if the die markers are there doesn't guarantee legitimacy... many of the current crop of counterfeiters use genuine examples to create laser cut dies.
