Is this 1989 penny an error?

    That Cent was hit with a blunt object on the Obverse which dented it. You can see the smashed area opposite to it on the Reverse. Unfortunately that occurred after the Cent was minted. So PMD - Post Mint Damage

    But still always good to ask.

    Also.. The rim was scraped near the date. It exposed the zinc underneath the copper plating.

    As stated, PMD. It took a hit after leaving the mint.
