Is this coin artificially toned or naturally toned? I have not seen it in hand but it looks a bit strange from the photos. What do you think of it? AT or NT. Cleaned or not? Bruce
The coin has been polished and the toning is most certainly a direct result of the whatever solution was used to polish the coin. Therefore, Yes, the toning is AT and the coin is a double problem coin. Don't walk, run away!
So far, you all, have confirmed my opinion. Actually I wanted to see if someone would defend this coin. Too bad someone ruined a key coin for the series. Bruce
I wouldnt consider it as direct AT.Looks more like cleaned/polished as stated and it has retoned since.so it would be labeled as "retoned" at some companies, and cleaned at others.
It may not be the exact same color, but IMO it is very dangerous to deem a coin AT simply because of the color of the toning, no matter how rare it is for the series.
Leigh- Your example looks natural and is a very nice coin. The coin is question that started this thread has all the wrong colors and looks like a chemical reaction . I have a toned Peace dollar and guess what – it is CAC certified :thumb:
Well, I never did state that I thought it was AT, I stated that I have never seen one in that particular color, which should by my accounts raise suspicion as to how this coin arrived with this particular toning. Have you ever seen "robins egg" blue on a Peace dollar before? edit: That's a nice '22 Peace BTW
It seemed that you were implying that the coin was AT because of the color. I have not seen many with that color and the coins I have seen have only small areas of that color like my 22-S.
Thank you Sir for your kind reply....I have looked at many of your coins and find that you do indeed have an eye for NT coinage. Takes some time to denote the subtle changes in coloration between natural and enhanced toning properties.
