Is this 1893 commemorative half dollar really prooflike?

    Too much, that thing is a harshly cleaned XF. The details in the sails are almost completely obliterated. Blech.

    So, perhaps all harshly cleaned silver coins are worthy of a prooflike designation by SGS?

    Its been cleaned as everyone has said. SGS is not dependable at best. As far as grading goes. I have been collecting and looking at coins for almost 15-20yrs and still do not think I acurately grade correcting all the time especially from pictures. grading is subjective.

    OK, let me ask you - why ? The coin is in the slab of a disreputable compnay. The coin has obvioulsy been harshly/improperly cleaned and would be body-bag material at any reputable TPG. The coin is already vastly over-priced for what it is. Numerous collectors have already said that they would never own such a coin.

    So what possible reason could you have for wanting to bid on that coin ?

    In reality, you don't have any reason. But you are saying that you do just to get others to comment like I am. Now there is only 1 person who has ever done that consistently around here - and you are showing every indication that you are that one person only using a different name. And if I see one more indication that makes me think that - the same thing is going to happen to you as what happened to that other person. Do I make myself clear ?

    Now normally I would not comment like this in public. But I am doing so for a specific reason and that is to let all other members of this forum know what my thoughts are. And it is my wish that no other members make any comments about this or discuss it. What will be will be and I'll see to it myself.
