I remember reading about the gold collectors near San Francisco area. They would scavenge the land, looking for gold. I am pretty sure there is not much left because of this, but do people actually still look for gold? On top of that, what is it really worth compared to the US dollar. It would be awesome to just find some gold by looking around desert areas or other areas that have not been searched much. I am pretty sure you could do it with a "gold" detector device. I see some people walking around parks, looking for this. Well, most of them not for gold anyways but I mean aluminum.
I would think that everything of value has been found. However, this article is quite interesting: http://www.neatorama.com/2011/06/22/nyc-man-“mines”-streets-for-gold/ Basically, the guy roams around NYC with a detector and gets a pretty decent haul. This is mostly gold and other scrappings that are dropped along the many jewelry store routes, however, so who knows what something like San Francisco could produce.
Gold prospecting with a metal detector in a busy city? This will be something to watch. Maybe some whizzkid will come up with a palm-sized metal detector, who knows.
