ok. i will ask everyone i know to hold 2 circ coins in their hand. 2 68 Canadian quarters. 1 nickel, 1 silver. then ask them to tell them apart. a lot of bank tellers can't tell they have a silver quarter in their tray until i see it and ask them for that specific coin and explain it to them. i go to get a coffee and tip 50 cents with a kennedy and they ask what it is. i go to buy a coffee and pay with a $2 bill and they have to ask their manager if they can accept it. people in the U.S. have a hard time knowing their own currency and what they handle. they didn't grow up when silver was floating around and to them it's just a funny, shiny quarter. the original question was about WORLD coins in circ and they have that silvery look to them that some of them can make one wonder if their is ANY silver content in them. just because someone does or has handled a lot of money in their life does not mean they should be able to identify a silver world coin from that of a different composition IMO. Very true. I know people that have never seen a Kennedy half dollar, we still make these so it's pretty funny. And there's lots of people who think $2 bills are rare or there are those people who think they are "funny money". I read up an article where someone at a McDonald's drivethru was denied an order for trying to spend $2 bills. Even got the manager and THAT guy has never seen them either.

I thought cashiers regularly handle circulating money?? $2 bills are in circulation today, same for Kennedy halves.

Interesting, I think that all US coins ever issued are still legal tinder. Can you imagine trying to get the cashier at MickyD's to take a 2-cent piece? What country has the longest circulating, still valid, coinage?

Guess that your first sentence answers your question. ;) From what I know, the oldest still existing currency is the Pound (UKP), but the coins and notes are - as in pretty much every other country - taken out of circulation and lose their legal tender status. So the world's oldest coins in circulation can, at least from a legal POV, be found in the US. Now whether they would all be easily accepted is a different issue ...

As for the oldest still circulating coin design, that would be the Swiss 10 rp/ct coin. You can, again at least in legal theory, find pieces from 1879 in circulation that look like this year's pieces design wise. However, those issues that had different specifications (brass 1918, nickel 1932-39) are not valid any more. The same applies to those old Swiss silver circulation pieces from 1/2 fr to 5 fr which today are not legal tender.
