The only thing I find interesting with them are the ultra high grade ones. The Ike dollars having such a large surface area, meant a lot of area to get scuffed, dinged, etc.. as they were coming off the lines. So really clean ones are not rare but 3 figure range not out of the question. I got some silver ones for registry set. There's spots for clad too but I just haven't bothered. I just looked it up. I only paid $28 for this one. lol I couldn't send one in to get it graded for that price. To give you an idea how (un)popular they are. I got a Bicentenial silver MS-67 for $45.
Ike dollars have been around for more than 40 years, and they're not worth anything now. Obviously that's not going to change in the future. I believe Littleton Coins flooded the market with high grade examples with their "Big Sky Hoard."
I think that most people have pretty much tuned the page on these coins. Years ago some promoters tried to get $300+ for high grade certified Ikes, but I have not seen those ads for years. The trouble is the mint is now flooding the market with too many new modern coins. It’s getting to be too much for most collectors to follow. Once you get your mind and pocketbook overloaded with too much stuff, you turn it all off. This week’s front page Coin World story says that the West Point Mint has made 2 million of each of this year’s America the Beautiful coins and will release them at various spots around the country. This roll or pocket search “lottery” is intended to stimulate coin collecting. I can see some of these coins getting into very high grade slabs and being promoted at high prices. Some people will take the bait, “everybody will need to have these coins” (NOT I) Five years from now, they will be in most collectors’ rear view mirrors, and the buyers of these coins will have lost most of their money.
Nothing wrong with saving Ike dollars but it would be nothing to make money on. If a person takes the time to learn how to grade the things and only saves the nice high grade ones, they might make a few dollars many years from now. Too many of these out there to ever make a lot of money.
