I like both and the toning but would not pay a premium for them. The Grant in some way is an AU beauty.

I do like the Grant for AU53, I have a dark Pilgrim that it reminds me of.
You aren't looking at any kind of premium for that "toning", and if you need to sell you are probably looking at less than market compared to blast white or colorful toning.

Indeed, but what resides in ones collection, regardless of the color or condition, is priceless..........:)

On Stone Mt. I do consider the toning a bit negative, but on the Grant coin it is coin where the toning is neutral, but one I would keep.

I approached these as if I was looking to buy them.

My opinion is that the toning on the Stone Mountain covers too much of the design, so I would pass on it if I was a buyer. And, Stone Mountain is a pretty easy come to locate.
On the Grant I actually really like it. I am drawn to silver coins with the dark/light contrast anyway, and that one really highlights the design well. I'd be a buyer and might pay a 10% premium.

    JMHO.

First one is slightly negative, second coin is neutral.

I consider dark even toning neutral.

Thanks to all for the feedback! I learned a lot. Overall your opinions were along the lines of my gut feelings. I guess those feelings are oftentimes most accurate. If we like or don't like a coin, chances are the majority will feel the same way. I ended up selling the Stone for a decent market price within hours of posting on eBay, my fastest sale ever. I decided not to part with the Grant just yet.

I like the look of that one a lot more with your pictures, has that war look that it's commemorating. Very fitting

The Stone Mountain is neutral-negative. I don't find it attractive, and would avoid that coin (or sell it quickly if it was foist upon me).

The Grant is extremely attractive. I wouldn't call it "toned" per se, rather, it has the original patina of a lightly circulated coin.

I'd keep the grant, which is a solid AU and pleasant for what it is. The stone is too high a grade to have that distracting toning, IMO. I'd part with that

Not crazy about the Stone Mountain. The toning is too distracting.

The Grant is kind of attractive, but it's too dark for me. If it were an uncirculated coin, it would be said to have unsalvageable, terminal toning. The contrast with the circulation wear helps a bit.

If you like it it's positive. If you don't like it. it's negative. If you are indifferent to it, it's neutral. What anyone else thinks of it is immaterial. (Un less theyare already yours and you are trying to sell them.)

Having said that, If I was looking at them for myself, I like the Grant. I doubt I would pay a premium for it though. I HATE the Stone Mountain. I have never understood what people see in that spotty blotchy type toning. I no only would not pay a premium for that coin, I would be reluctant to take it at a sizable discount. To me that is a coin in search of a dip.

I think the Stone Mountain toning is neutral to slightly negative, but the older slab is a nice plus.

The Grant has a nice circulated cameo look to it. Slightly positive for an AU.
