As opposed to dealers like Apmex? This may be a noob question, but where do you in general get the best prices?
When the prices are going up e-bay can be cheaper but when the price is going down Apmex may be a better buy. I check Kitco to see what the price is at the time. If its other than bullion you can look at HA.com and see the latest sale price.
I second that. I have had good luck buying from Apmex on the dips. I have noticed that prices on Apmex rise faster than they fall (kind of like gas prices) but E-bay prices aren't going to fall.
Alot depends on what you are buying. If you are buying a coulpe tubes of ASEs or 4-5 ounces of gold, Apmex is good for that. If you are buying single coins, I exclusively use either ebay or a quarterly coin show when it comes to town. The only downside to APMEX is the $25.00 shipping fee. So, if you are buying single coins..that's a bit rediculous. I've found that single coins are often much cheaper on ebay with lower and lately FREE shipping offers which blow APMEX out of the water when buying one coin at a time.
for single coins, find a good reputable dealer on ebay with free/ cheap shipping. ...and don't get all crazy with your bidding. for everything else....APMEX>
I have bought quite a few coins on eBay but mostly modern bullion, from reputable sellers, and who offer free shipping. I've never had a problem. Personally, I would never buy raw uncertified numismatic-valued coins on eBay. In a fast rising market, you can pick up some decent prices on eBay because of the time delay from when prices are set. Furthermore, there's competition on eBay that tends to moderate prices. I've also had good luck with coins for which there are numberous auctions for that type coin -- watch for ones that are ending soon with very little bidding. With APMEX, prices are adjusted instantly.
I'm considering an investment in both silver and gold, and as a newbie too, I'm looking for the best prices. I have about 6-8K available - what would you do? I'm thinking going 50/50 split of the two...
The first thing you should do is slow down and do a lot of investigation and study. It is very easy to spend a lot of money quickly on gold and silver, only to discover later that you wish you had done something else, overpaid, purchased merchandise with flaws not easy for a newbie to see, or purchased something that can only be sold at a discount to spot. Ebay is one of the major outlets for merchandise that would be difficult to sell to an informed collector/investor if they had the coin in hand. All you need is a good camera and the skill to use it.
I received the Goldline info packet in the mail, and yes, performed other research beforehand - CoinTalk is part of it. Is Goldline a valid company to deal with?
You wont find the answer here. All you will find here is 20-30 different ideas from people who would love to tell you how to spend your money but they accept none of the risk if they are wrong. Here is mine. Personally, I'd buy 3 2010 gold 1 ounce BUffalos, 2 rolls of ASEs, 2 roll of 2010 Maple leafs, 2 rolls of Mexican Libertads (1983 mintage) and 2 rolls of Philharmonics. Buff $1,239x3 = 3,717 ASE 400.80x2 = 801.6 (20 to a roll) MLeaf 501x2 = 1,002 (25 to a roll) Mex Lib 412.80x2 = 825.60 (20 to a roll) Phill 418.80x2 = 837.6 (20 to a roll) Total = $7,183.8 not including shipping or insurance.
where can I get this and are these good prices...I know gold is high right now, I'm not too concerned about losing money as this is a long term investment, or at the least, a hedge on the dollar. I think silver will only go up and stay...
These are prices on Apmex as of about 8pm tonight. I don't know if they are good. I'd didn't invest any time shoping around, I just listed a hypothetical example as if you were going to drop a hunk of money in one transaction. This is what it might look like. They were current prices as of an hour ago. Personally, I like all types of silver so I chose a variety. 2rolls of every major bullion coin offered today (no pandas and no kooks ..to much premium for me). I also prefer the older Libertad design but many like the current one. It's a personal choice. Gold is actually on a dive from a high 10 days ago of $1,241 to currently $1,177. You might keep an eye on Kitco.com as well.
By noon tomorrow you will have many many more people offering their free advice. Have a nice evening and weekend.
With 8 grand you might want to buy a couple bags of old 90% silver (merc, rosies, franks, walker, SLQ and Washington quarters) and have fun searching the huge mound of silver. The world is your oyster with that much cash at the ready. Like the sweeper of the clouds said before ..take your time and do some research before you spend a dime. There is no rush and no way to time the PM market.
