My LCS will buy for about 90% as well which isn't too bad at all. I don't sell myself I just hoard. If you sell 40% to a LCS then you'll get ripped off.
Got a local flea market or antique show that's not snowed in? Put $5 face in silver in your pocket and "go shopping" for coins or other collectibles. You're likely to score some great barters - flea marketers are nutty about silver, they all visualize silver going up and up and up.
Every coin shop is different. I've had mostly good experiences with them. I wouldn't lump them all together as places that will rip you off
He had a bad experience selling 3 silver dimes for slightly over $4 when they were worth 22x face. He was given a free dated buffalo nickel by the same dealer. The dealer probably would have preferred not even buying them but needed to make a couple of bucks for his time. If you know what the value of your coins are you can't get ripped off. Selling to dealers is a convenience. I have sold to dealers because I didn't want to go through the hassle to make 15% more. I don't think anybody thinks they will get the best deal at a dealer. Coingeek is just 13 though.
Convenience is worth a lot. I picked a SDB less than a hundred yards from the biggest coin shop in the Columbus metro area.
Hey now, I bought my 1882 CC GSA Morgan off CL and I met the guy at a dunkin donuts. LMAO. He had a receipt all ready to go and everything. I got it for 200.
