Is it possible that the ground has given up an extreme rarity?

    To support that it is a contemporary counterfeit, the surface marks mostly look like a variety of test punches, which indicates it was a rather convincing counterfeit in the time it circulated.

    Check the metal alloy with an XRF tester. Places they buy gold scrap should have one.
