Is it OK to dip coins?

  1. Of course! It is a time-honored tradition in numismatics

  2. Yes, and in fact I have dipped many of the coins in my personal collection

  3. Sure, but only if the coin is very ugly and no one would want to buy it as-is

  4. I guess so, the TPG's straight-grade dipped coins so it must be good

  9. No, it makes the coin look unnatural, especially older coins which should have some tone

  10. No way! It is a deceitful practice akin to cleaning or doctoring

I've seen many statements on various forums that it is perfectly acceptable to dip coins. Even the TPGs do it. But I've also read where folks think it's an unacceptable practice. So I wanted to do a poll to see what the opinion is of CT members.

There will always be some that are 100% against it and others who think it’s OK.
I voted that it’s OK if done properly.
However, if it’s a common coin where you can buy another one that is already nice and white then I’d say sell the one that would be dipped and just buy a white one. Let someone who enjoys dark and crusty coins enjoy it rather than dip it...
If it’s a rare coin that would benefit from proper conservation, send it to NGC or PCGS and have the pros restore it.

I'll generally choose a (silver) coin with a little natural color over a blast white one. Partly I guess it's just what my eye likes. But I dip a coin once in a while if I believe it will be beneficial. Say to remove a light fingerprint that is just appearing, or something so ugly I think it's worth taking a chance on.
I don't view dipping as deceitful. If a coin is overdipped, it shows. If it's an older coin but bright, I'll assume it's likely been dipped, and I can decide if I want it anyway. (probably not)

Yes it’s fine and of course it goes without saying that it should be done properly

Aren't you supposed to dip certain coins in certain condiments .. like copper coins into Ketchup? Nickel into Pepsi-Cola ??

    yes, it is okay:

    1) put coin in kitchen

    2) put dip in the living room.

    3) carefully take coin from holder.

    4) put coin back in holder.

    5) close up dip.

    There, you are done.

I've ordered the chemicals and a suitable reagent bottle to mix up a one liter batch of VKB's referenced Kodak S-10 'mystery coin cure' - I have a handful of junk silver 'volunteers' with some unsightly tarnish/toning/staining.
After an initial acetone bath, I'll be dunking them into the 'strange brew' for varying periods of time to assess the results - a little coin dipping music > :nailbiting:

The coolest part is the solution's "shelf life" is really good. It doesn't go bad quickly. I've had a partially full bottle last over a year.

their dip is too acidic and they're being eaten alive upon exposure.

It's OK as long as ya know what you are doing..........yeah, the big boys do it, but us 'regulars' don't always know what they are doing. Case in point.......I don't know what I'm doing, so I shy away from the practice.
