I just saw this post and honestly, I haven't read through all the posts but this is what I have to say:
I didn't really start collecting until I inherited my grandfather's collection. Since I inherited it, I have been doing my best to finish his collection where he left off.
I think it is a great way to carry on his legacy and I can pass it on to my kids and hopefully grandkids.

Tearing monuments down is, by and large, not a great idea in my opinion, even if they glorify dictators or genocide for example. Don't see anything wrong with expressing today's disagreement though, maybe even right next to such a monument. Similarly, collecting and thus "conserving" coins with themes or designs that may be considered offensive by somebody these days is, by itself, perfectly fine with me. And in this particular case, the collection is a valuable memento ...

I visit the South Carolina state capital from timebto time. It tickles me that in the senate chambers there is a portrait of every president but one.... Lincoln!

I work in Akron, NY. The Tonawanda Indian reservation goes to my school. They actually call each other "skins." For example, they will say "Yes, I heard Sharon Goldstein is dating a skin from the rez (reservation)."
