I love your choice of words, "promiscuous pairings". Wonderful usage.:thumb: Very interesting ksparrow and thanks for the research. I appreciate you pointing this out. Perhaps one day we'll have a VAM like list for trade dollars so that varieties can be recognized.
Wish I had a camera or scanner , next time I see Spock I'll ask him to take a few pictures to post , He was with me when I showed it to the guy who wrote the Trade Dollar article for Coin World . So he knows the quality of it . I know it scares me . rzage
The liberty in the obverse is suspect something else about the reverse but I cant get my fingers around it.
It is this (1795 BB-51): http://search.stores.ebay.com/My-Replica-Silver-Coins-520_1795_W0QQfciZQ2d1QQfclZ3QQfsnZMyQ20ReplicaQ20SilverQ20CoinsQ20520QQfsooZ2QQfsopZ3QQsaselZ713500768QQsofpZ0 With a recut date (what I call the 1796 BB-51): http://search.stores.ebay.com/My-Replica-Silver-Coins-520_1796_W0QQfciZQ2d1QQfclZ3QQfsnZMyQ20ReplicaQ20SilverQ20CoinsQ20520QQfsooZ2QQfsopZ3QQsaselZ713500768QQsofpZ0 Anotherwords, they took and copied a 1795 BB-51 and then recut the date on a die and turned it into a 1796 and since it doesn't jive with any authentic 1796's, I call it a 1796 BB-51. Ribbit Ps: Here's a real 1795 BB-51: http://www.coinfacts.com/silver_dol...795_silver_dollars/1795_silver_dollar_b14.htm Compare it to the 1796 and you will see that it matches perfectly, except for the date.
Yepper! B-14 or BB-51, same thing. I ran across one a few weeks ago and it had me stumped until I checked it against the 2 1795's and noticed it was the 14/51 and that told me it was a counterfeit, but it wasn't being sold as a counterfeit. The actual 1795's they made are the ones that will be a problem, since it is correct and will fool uneducated peeps. I'm scared to buy a DBD now unless I know the seller. :thumb: Ribbit
They have made the 1795, '96 and '97 all with the same die diagnostics. Now the scary part is, to th ebest of my knowledge nobody knows how they are doing it. Because even the tiniest, most minute diagnostics are copied perfectly.
I was actually thinking of getting one of the 1795's. The seller has some coppers I wouldn't mind getting for my type set and if I get them, I'll get one of the 1795's. But right now, I've got a few coins on Heritage I'd like to get so I have to wait to see if I'll win them first and if I don't, then I'll have some spare change and may get them, since the quality isn't bad. Ribbit
By the way Toad, those coins you posted links to are not the same as the one I posted. You need to look at them closer.
Here's the one you posted: http://www.civitasgalleries.com/counterfeits/images/1796silverdollar.jpg Here's the one I posted: http://cgi.ebay.com/Replica-1796-Dr...11976QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1713.m153.l1262 Except for a slight difference in the date, I don't see a difference? They are both a 1796 version of a 1795 BB-51 and have the same spurs on the stars and LIBERTY lines up the same and the reverse is also the same. So, other than a slight difference in the cutting of the date, what else is different? Ribbit
I won my auctions on Heritage so now I can't afford to get the copies. I may do it later though. Ribbit
Could be one of those EMD machines ksparrow was telling me about , they're accurate to .0005 of an inch . rzage
So 2 different 1796 B-14's/BB-51's were made? Sounds to me like they must have used the same 1795 B-14/BB-51 as the template? Have you seen the 1795 they made (identical to your posted 1796)? :kewl: Ribbit
