I picked up this Legionary denarius with the idea I might be upgrading. But in the end, I think I just got another for the sake of owning it. MARCUS ANTONIUS AR Denarius OBVERSE: ANT AVG III VIR R P C, Praetorian galley, thyrsos behind prow REVERSE: LEG II, eagle between standards Patrae 32-31 BC 3.75g, 17mm RSC 27, Cr544/14, Syd 1216 Compare top my other of Legio II
Hard to say...because design elements are lost to the strike on one and preservation on the other one...nice new score all the same!
In my eyes it's an upgrade, but that matters little. It is a nice coin and that is what matters most. Congrats on another addition to your Legionary denarius collection.
Nice one, Bing. I think it is an upgrade, despite being a bit off-center (I agree with chrsmat71 - much better surfaces). It is far better than my Legionary denarii, all three of them... As for the "just for the sake of owning it" - I do that all the time. With ancients, they are all different, even the same type (so I tell myself while unlimbering my (digital) wallet).
Well, if it was me and a Flavian denarius was on offer of a type I already have but off-centre and a better grade, I'd snatch it up! Very cool acquisition JW!
To me it's a definite upgrade. An off center doesn't bother me so much as long as the major elements are there, which yours are.
ahahaha... i knew what it was before i looked Bing.. but nothing wrong with having a favorite type coin
It's an upgrade even being off center. I have 2 LEG II also, one with a hole. It''s better than the non pierced one and I'd probably never sell it.
Definite upgrade due to the placement of LEG II dead center. If it were off center in the opposite direction it would be junk but this shouts, "Look what I am!"
No Legio II! Need one! Great job @Bing . I believe it "upgrade" as the design is crisp, and clearly Leg II shows out. Here is my Legio V... LOOK HARD! I keep seeing CHORTIS SPECVLATORVM ... yeah, yeah, that's the ticket! That is what I see... RImp Marc Antony AR Den 32-31 BC Legio V Ship Eagle Standards S 1479 Cr 544-18
