Casting bubbles would be more spherical. I think what you see is the state of the dies--perhaps a little rusty, but also the removal of encrustations and horn silver could account for the appearance. If this is a fake, it would have been made using an authentic coin as the hub and striking the fake with the newly created die, IMO.
it also looks genuine to me Boheringer 19 V15/R8 The BM coin (if someone has the courage to find the photo on their website) : As far as i know, no forgeries using V15 or R8 transfer dies are known

Thank you for the compliment, Richard. I'd want to examine the coin in hand before I made any true determination of its authenticity, but nothing from the photos makes me suspicious. I'd be interested to know what the coin sells for--I didn't realize Syracuse struck this reverse type until I read this thread.
