Are you an ANA member? If so, what do you get out of it? How long have you been a member? If not, why don't you join? Benefits of membership? Drawbacks?
I've never joined but I may, the Numismatist magazine is one of the best but I just haven't got around to it yet! You can look at the link to see the benefits. https://www.money.org/ANA-member-benefits
Yes, for many years. Membership supports the future of the hobby and unlike some other "memberships" that are simply glorified magazine subscriptions, ANA members elect officers and board members directly. We also have a kickin' summer convention. You may have heard of it.
I haven't joined, being somewhat newer to the hobby, I'm probably in the Groucho Marx camp, "I wouldn't be a member of any club that would have me." I may change my mind after perusing the benefits link posted above.
I've been a member for 40+ years. Up until recently I enjoyed sending coins to NGC for grading and not having to be an NGC member. The best benefit is the Numismatist magazine. 3-4 must read articles each month. Whenever the WFoM is in Denver I attend and I take the bus trip to Colorado Springs to spend time for an afternoon at the headquarters. For myself I enjoy the membership.
The Hugh Wood insurance is important to me as well. I have never found a better deal. There are some that dislike the ANA leadership but I don't know why they have that opinion. Maybe it has something to do with the way they spend ANA money?
I’ve been an ANA member since the 1980’s. Benefits are many: 1. Allows purchase of Hugh Wood insurance. 2. Required to join North American Collectibles Association which then allows purchase of Ship-and-Insure insurance for valuables shipped by most carriers. 3. Numismatist, both current and past issues of this great magazine. 4. Two large shows per year. 5. Required to join CAC. 6. Coin museum at HQ. 7. Mail lending library with extensive holdings. 8. Not so obvious is representing and defending the hobby to the public, to government officials and to legislators. ANA is very different from ANS (American Numismatic Society) to which I also have belonged for many years. ANS is primarily a research organization although is has some functions in common with ANA … coin museum, magazine, and representing numismatics to the world. I recommend joining both, but if you’re collector and choosing only one, choose ANA. Cal
Yes, I originally joins for the Hugh Wood Insurance. They have good articles in their booklet. This month, they talked about having a will or trust, and how to manage a coin collection to pass on to your heirs.
I have only been collection about 15 years. I live in a rural area and there aren't any local coin stores. After I got my father's collection I found he had coin magazines too. I started to looking over the net to find out if there were any magazines about coin collecting. I found ANA and joined and got their magazine as well. Somewhere in the search, I found Cointalk and joined it too. Both have been a great help. Thanks, guys and gals.
If you've been a dues-paying member for 50 years, they'll send you The Numismatist free, no more dues to get it. That's what happened to me, at any rate.
