I tried using my iPhone today with a Doug-style set up. I ordered a tripod but that hasn't arrived yet. Anyhow, the first attempt was good. The iPhone allows you to adjust the exposure and brightness which is really nice (something my old digital camera was lacking). Guangci's "Bunny Guy". He's a great contemporary artist in China (I bought this in Beijing). He is easily my favorite contemporary artist. His work is brilliant.
Excellent! I painted everything inside the pots black but I don't know that it is really necessary. Shoot more.
If you really want to get into photography with your iPhone you can get lenses that attach to it. There is a macro lens that you can use. Good ones are a bit expensive but I'm pretty sure there are some cheap ones you can play around with.
I have one, and I've been successful taking close-ups of small things like countermarks but not coins this size.
These are black on the inside. What I like about your method is I can finally quit obsessing about the background altogether, and now focus on the coin. To think of the hours I spent trimming out a background with a small eraser tool!
Someone has an interest in philosophy... I've read quite a few books on those shelves. Oh, and nice set up also...
Hmm. I really need to improve my setup. It sure would be nice to not have to fiddle with the background.
I found the pots in my garage while I was snowblowing and remembered doug's post I had to buy the dowel materials at the craft store but that was only a few dollars. I needed to take a few inches off of them too with a saw. I'm not handy at all and it was really easy.
i've seen a guy on the net somewhere take a small lens out of a broken disc player held in a bobby pin attached to the camera for micro shots. inexpensive and clever, but these pics are purty sharp w/o one
It's the dowel part of your and @dougsmit 's setup that make me nervous. I assume some degree of balancing an imbalanced ancient coin on a narrow dowel is required, no? I'm sure I would have coins tumbling to the bottom of the flower pots in every shoot. Or do you work with nets?
