Ionia, Miletos AR 1/12 stater Late 6th Cent. - Early 5th Cent. BCE Forepart of a roaring lion left Stellate pattern in incuse square. 9.24mm, 1.26g SNG Kayhan 465 These little coins are classics. Perhaps one of the most affordable of the early issues of coinage, is it any wonder they're so popular? I always wanted one, and here she is. This was the last coin on my 2017 list, so from now on anything I buy is strictly a target of opportunity. Show off any coins you think relevant.
For sure this has become a wish list type coin for me. I have nothing like it. Nice score Sallent. Did you have a short 2017 list or did you buy a lot of coins?
I've purchased 30 coins so far this year. My want list for 2017 was 20 coins long. I'm done with the list and then some. From now on I'm just buying whatever catches my eyes (provided I have the funds for it.)
Nice coin. I really like the teeth on yours. They don't show up as prominently on many of these. I have to ask what "SNG Nathan" is. I haven't seen this reference used before.
I'm curious too. Is it humor? Is Nathan the guy from whom you bought the coin? ... EDITED: Ohhh... I bet Sallent or the seller was the victim of autocorrect, and SNG "Nathan" was autocorrected from the more likely SNG "Kayhan". Looks like "incuse" was autocorrected to "include" as well. ... Also, the nomenclature for the Miletos denominations seems to be inconsistent in archives. Is is a fraction of a stater? Is it an obol? I guess what we call it doesn't matter much, as long as the weight, size, and metal are given.
What is up with some pictures not showing up in posts lately? Chrsmat's post is like the fourth time this week that I see the small icon of a photo with an X over it.
