I am thinking of investing in either MS or PR Gold Buffalo for a 3-5 year investment. Are the proof coins going to be worth the extra $300+ over this time frame or would I come out better buying the MS coins?
    Thanks for your input!

Why so hot for the Buffalo? Why not go for 1 Gold Krugerand? A lot better for raw gold investment.

Not only for investment, but I like the design of the coin as well.

Perhaps BNB, because the OP is curious that there might exist a numismatic value in Proofs over bullion (MS) AGBs that might be better for the monies invested in the given time frame. Such as the with the progress shown with the 2008w fractional AGB values that keep rising. elaine often posts figures for these in the threads on these coins.

I'm sure there will be plenty of them to help you along and advise you on your inquiry and to advise you of the pitfalls of investing in collector or numismatic coins... There's a lot here on CT to read already available at your fingertips. You can use the Search function in the CT tool bar above to review previous discussions on PM investing and the consensus regarding AGBs.

not to be snide, but if any of us knew for sure, it wouldn't be investing, it would be banking. There are no predictable outcomes for PMs, it is always a gamble. Some would argue that the higher the price of gold inches, the less likely that you will EVER recoup your investment and the more likely that you will lose big.

There is a difference between coin collecting and bullion investing. I personally do not use the term investment when it comes to PMs. I'd rather use hedge or insurance.

w.t.s, a 3-5 year strategy is a short cycle in PMs and I would consider it "flipping", similar to the housing market where the bottom can fall out from under you.

I personally pursue a long term PM strategy... but to answer your question.

The safe 'bet' is to trade fiat for the less expensive bullion version. In this manner, you will only need to track the spot price of Au.

Purchasing slabs creates an added effect and will make it more difficult to sell within your 5-year plan. The issue will be that dealers will not buy your PMs with the premium but at the standing spot price. The same will hold true for proof coins in that most dealers do not buy back with the premium if they do not have low mintages.

The best to you and DYODD

That sort of approach doesn't generally work. Once you decide whether you are a collector or investor, you'll know what to buy. If you try to take some middle course, you'll probably do worse. When you buy the stock of a company, you don't say that part of the reason is that you like the design of the logo. The same goes for investment coins.

True - you have to decive...

I agree with CloudSweeper. Decide whether you're in it for the bullion or the numismatic value. You can't easily do both.

I'm buying for bullion. If I were to pay the additional premium for the prospectors or ASEs, I would have spent much more and still had less that I could sell when TSHTF.

I base my purchases on spot, not on the numismatic value. It was a decision based on my specific goals, which are likely different from most...

I would bet on the proofs. If you look at greysheet bid, most of the 1oz eagles have about a $600 difference between the proof and BU versions.

I'm not sure about that question about investment as I bought some 1986 and 1987 panda gold proof sets back when they were new ( 86 & 87 ) plus 1 oz. platinum pandas ( N.Y. friendship coin ) and the value has only gone up because the price of gold and platinum has risen so much , owning them for 22 years or so did not seem worth it , I'm just glad the metal prices did not go down ! The platinums do have more of a premium built in because only 1000 were made. I payed less that $ 1000 for them back in 87 and they are going for over $ 3000. today .
