Hello, all error collectors including @paddyman98! I've been studying this coin that I saw at another forum. Thought it was interesting and decided to post it here for all of you to make a prediction and comment on. The owner is already in the process of getting it authenticated and graded. One coin shop owner said it was worth a dime because no date but offered $100 when they were walking out. (Shifty). Anyways, awaiting the results. What do you all think will happen?? Any predictions? Here it is and the link Double Struck Mervury Dime Question - COIN Help U Community ..................
To me it looks like a double struck dime with the second strike about 30% off center, with a detached delamination on the reverse. Although that might be an indent from another planchet.
This is not a genuine mint error. A genuine coin struck so far off center should be distended quite a bit beyond its normal diameter. There should also be some signs of the round edges of the dies from the second impression, none of which shows up here. I'm not even convinced the understrike is genuine . . . this could be a fake from overseas.
Please let me know what the grading results are. It looks too perfect to be real as double struck coins a extremely difficult to find with the pattern being in the exact same location as compared to the original. Also, the reverse doesn’t match the size of the obverse.
Looks to me like the orientation of the obverse die relative to the reverse die (die rotation) is different on the 2nd strike than it is on the 1st strike. This should be a static characteristic of both strikes. I agree not a mint error.
I tried the same, and had a hard time convincing myself that I could see a difference in orientation between strikes on the obverse.
