I believe I benefit from more people being interested in the coins I collect (mostly ancients). Yes, my activities in the last 16 years have probably caused some prices to go up by getting others interested in my hobby but those new people patronize the dealers that go out of their way to stock coins of the general types that I want. They buy enough of the ones I don't want that the dealer feels like he can afford to risk getting a new bunch of coins which will include a few more coins that I want. Also, I'm getting to an age where I hope some of you younger collectors will want to own some of my coins and will buy them from my heirs who so far have shown no interest in continuing my hobby wherever I leave it off. I don't intend to make them rich but perhaps my coins will bring them more than melt value which could be what they are worth if no one but me had any interest in them. It is a fact that there are fewer and fewer potential collectors since collecting hobbies are not as 'cool' as they were when I was a kid. We have a few young numismatists here but more people come to collecting ancient coins when they are middle aged (30 is the new definition of over the hill, I'm told) or even newly retired. When I was a kid, most academically capable kids took Latin in high school, read the Odyssey and knew who Julius Caesar was. Today more dodge foreign language requirements (and consider a BS degree superior to a BA), read Harry Potter and eat Caesar salad. Anything I can do to make just one more person share my interests in the past makes me feel a little better about how I have spent my energy (and a couple of dollars along the way).
