has anyone ever found a 1950D jefferson nickel in circulation before? or from rolls? i bet that is quite a thrill!
I own three of them and none of them came from circulation. I believe it was known when they came out that they would be somewhat rare and got snapped up quickly. There are lots of good examples of the 1950-D to be had and they run about 10 - 20 bucks. Heck, 1996-W Roosie will cost you more than that. 1950-D 2.6 million 1996-W 1.4 million
1960D small date cent Got in change at the store today. Very nice 1960D small date Lincoln. No spots, no scrapes, just nice. When I got home the loupe got a workout. It's a small date for sure. I thought those were long gone from common change.
My pictures and this forum do not get along. I never figured out how to reduce them. Not every time but once in a while I can change my avitar.
Everyone knew it was going to be the rarest Jefferson nickel and so everyone saved it very quickly. Because of that it is very easy to find them in high condition for no more than about $25 at most. It is not even that "rare" on an absolute basis, it just happens to be the rarest in the Jefferson nickel series. Semi-keys in high condition actually can cost more than the 1950-D because less people bothered to save them. (For a similar case, see the 1932D vs. the 1932S Washington quarters... the 32S is actually lower mintage, but the 32D is worth more, since they were saved less!) The 96W Roosevelt dime was less known, even by many collectors, until it wasn't possible to get it directly from the source anymore, so it's worth more at the time being. However, none of them ever circulated, they only came with 1996 uncirculated sets. So any that you'd ever get will be uncirculated. Plus the 1996W still is pretty much unknown by non-collectors (compare that to the 50D Jefferson that almost everyone, collectors or not, knew would be rare) so the demand id lower. Absolute rarity alone is not enough... rarity relative to demand is what drives prices up, and right now just about anyone who wants an 96W dime has one. Like someone else said in a post here, 2 coins is oversaturating the market if there's only 1 person who wants one, lol...
Just today, got some change back for some asprin and looked down and noticed a very shiny statehood quarter. Didn't think much of it til i got home. Was looking at it more closely and checked the mint mark and what do you know? An S mint mark!! It was only clad, and had circulated for a while, but still nice to find. I also picked a '51 wheatie off the street the same day. Was run over a few times by cars, but still a wheat cent and will go into a roll with my others
nice find! i've never had a S mint proof in my change! and for the wheat, great find! that's why i pick up coins off the ground. one time i found a forign coin and a wheat cent in the same day!
Today, going through some rolls from my local bank I found a 1941 wheat cent in pretty good condition. I alos found 6-7 from the 1950's.
pic shrinking I have found that if I open a picture in the "paint" program I can use Streach/skew and reduce the percentage to get the pic under 100 kb.
I forgot about this thread. Some of you may have already seen this since I posted a thread about it last week, but I'll put it here too. I got this last Friday at a White Castle drive thru... I went back later that day to see if they had anything else since I figured the Barber had to be from a collection. They weren't busy when I got there so the guy who works the drive up every time I go there indulged me. It turns out the Barber along with the following coins that I picked up are from a collection. He said an "old guy" came in with them this morning & spent them. Said they were extras from his collection & he figured he'd put them back into circulation since none of them were "anything special". Here's what else I ended up with... 1941 Walker (VF+ to XF, very tarnished) 1977 Kennedy 2x 1979 SBA's 1897 Barber Quarter (in much worse shape than the other one) 4 1943 Nickels (2xP, 2xS) 3 1941 Nickels 2 1940 Nickels (1 is very high quality) Wheaties (1909, 1916S, 1934x2, 1936, 1938S, 1939S, 1940, 1941, 1943, 1944, 1944Dx3, 1944S, 1945S, 1946, 1946D, 1947D, 1950S, 1953Dx2, 1954, 1955, 1956D, 1957D) F-XF IHC's (1906, 1907x2, 1909) F-VF IHC 1890 VF-XF (the patina is completely black, it's kinda neat) I guess there were a few others, there were a lot of other Wheaties & a few Buff's that were handed out before I got there, but it's a pretty good haul for face value. After I figure out which if any of the Wheaties I need I'll probably put those back into circulation.
A free program like IrfanView can come in handy for resizing etc. You can get a free album at PhotoBucket & upload your photos there then
white castle haul That is very cool to pick up all those coins for face.:thumb: It's also nice to know that the coins weren't "borrowed" from a collection to spend. Nice find.:high5:
Hello all. Nothing a sweet as Anemicoak's (Congrats), but I found a 1978 S Jefferson a few weeks ago and a 1964D Roosevelt this week.
