Beginning to suspect there may be someone with an old change jar or something in the area spending old coins without really looking at them. Got 3 more silver dimes at the Sam's Club where I work, one of them a 1947. Needless to say I always check the dimes carefully now, lol.
About 5 minutes ago I was handed a 1944-P war nickel. That was the first one of those I'd gotten in change in probably 10 years.
Here's a neat one for everyone. I got a Civil War token in change today! Much better than a plain old Lincoln which was what I should have gotten. Don't have access to my camera or scanner right now, but it's the same type as this one... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3456&item=8376526245
14th silver dime since I started working where I do (1957D)... plus got a 1983P dime that finishes off my clad Roosevelt collection, except for the 2006P. Recently finally got that pesky 1982P nickel too. Was tempted to buy some silver Roosevelts... but want to see how close to completing a collection of them from circulation, lol... if this keeps up may be able to do so in about a year or two. May get to point I have to trade in duplicates to buy some, but at this point just want to see how far I can go with this. I want to find out what bank or armored car company supplies our place with dimes, try to get some dimes straight from them, lol... probably be a lot of silver to find. So far I've done better hitting silver searching dimes at my store than I have going through half dollars.
I got a 1989 Bermuda 1 cent piece from a customer yesterday when she was paying. She ask if I would take a foreign coin and I told her sure anytime, I have gotten several good ones in the past few years. Madspec
Went to target today to get some bubble mailers, my change back was 76 cents. Three different statehood quarters and a 1940 wheat cent man I love to shop.
You just gotta look and be lucky I guess. A few days ago I went to a Ralphs and I always check the reject slot of the rip-off Coinstars when I see them for change. Well when I first went there there wasn't anything but for some reason I decided to check again 40 minutes later and to my amazement there was a lone 1937 Mercury dime! That is the first one I've ever found and I've gone through about 200 rolls of dimes in the last year or so.
No bank I've went to had many half-dollars. Most was three: 2000, 1973, 1990? Don't remember, it was something like that. Since I don't see many, I keep them. If only some good samaritan would tell me if any banks in Southern Dutchess County, New York had rolls of halves (hint ).
An old man gave my wife $6.00 in half dollars at our yard sale this weekend, she gave them to me this morning when she remembered she had put them in her pocket. They were all 40% silver halves.
So far I've got 47-S, 53-D, 54-D, 57, 57-D, 58-D, 59-D 61-D, 62-D, 63, 63-D (2), and 64-D. One thing that seems to be constant is I get more Denver-minted dimes than anything else, not unusual since I'm so close to Denver (which supports the theory that I'm probalby getting coins from someone's old change jar that they cashed in, not bothering to take a look for old coins). The dates are pretty random but I do seem to be getting mostly 60's and late 50's. Never found any pre-Roosevelt dimes... nut likely any Mercury or earlier dimes would get pulled from circulation pretty quickly, even by non-collectors, as being different from the norm and thus likely more valuable by perception. A lot less people would bother to look at dimes and see if they were silver or not... many people not old enough to remember the removal of silver from dimes don't even know dimes ever had silver. Whatever small amount of silver is still left in circulation I think is having an easier time escaping notice by non-collectors than it would have 30 or 40 years ago.
Found three Canadian silver quarters today two 80% 1960 and 1962 and a 1967 but since it sounds a little different from the others I assume it is a 50%.
15th silver dime in the drawer today... just 2 days after I posted how unlikely it would be to find a Mercury still in circulation... and today loose in the drawer, a 1941 Mercury dime! Nice condition too, probably AU... where it's been the last 65 years I don't know, but it's taken care of itself. Also loose in the drawer, a 1918 Wheat cent... and broke open a roll of pennies and found a 1998 one cent piece from the Bahamas, the one with the starfish. Nice day!
Got roll of dimes from where I work out of my own money just to be able to search more on my break, lol. No silver dimes today... but did get a 1999 10 cent piece from the East Caribbean States. Love the ship on the back!
Troodon, just curious. As a fellow Coloradoan, are you going to attend the launch of the Colorado Statehood quarter on June 14?
Sadly have to work... but plan to go downtown and get a few Colorado quarters from the mint gift shop the first day off I have after the release.
All halves minted in 1965 are without mintmark, whether they were minted in Philadelphia or Denver, so that half could be minted either place. Same with quarters and dimes that year, and in '66 and '67.
