FOund this nickel the other day in circulated rolls. I found many minor errors but this was my best find 1984 D mixed metal planchet!
I didn't notice the inprint on Jeffersons collar until this AM.
Also found some coins with lamination.

Are you sure that is an error...the Nickels don't have a clad layer that would show through like that....I would almost go with a stained nickel...or someone playing with copper

It's not a mixed metal planchet, but is possible it is a copper washed coin.

The copper spots are in the same location on both sides and where they touch the edge the edge of the coin is copper as well?

got an BU Wv quarter today. Gonna drop it at the bank for safekeeping. Has anyone else had their coins in a Safety deposit box tone gold? i'm thinking there's something funky in the air there.

Thanks for the thread. But since a 5 cent piece is comprised of a
copper-nickel alloy is it not posible to have defective planchets where the copper/nickel was not properly mixed?

the metals aren't mixed at the mint. The rolls come from sellers. and are prechecked, shipped, and probably checked again. I would doubt that the mint would allow that much of a slip in the metallurgy.

As a general rule the air in a bank vault is kept at a high humidity in order to help preserve paper documents. If you don't already do so, I would strongly suggest silica gel packs be kept in your box at the bank.

Anything is possible, question is how probable is it ? Answer - not very. But the probability for it being a copper washed coin is very high.

Looks to me just like normal severe corrosion... I have seen several nickels corroded to about this degree and don't think this one is especially unusual. Just depends on what chemical environment it's kept in. Keep a nickel in a warm, humid, slightly acidic and/or salty environment and it will end up looking like this eventually.

In addition, if your bank has metal safety deposit boxes rather than plastic ones, I would keep the coins in some type of non-reactive plastic holders (like mylar or polyethylene).
