There was a special 3 coin set, dollar, half & quarter that was 40% silver issued in '76. But these were not coins issued for circulation - it was a special collector's set.

My record for the weirdest thing I ever found would be a 50 ore coin from Sweden, dated 2001. Found this in my change at the food court in the mall in Colorado, apparently mistaken for a penny. How it got here I'll never know. I've actually found several foreign coins in my change, including ones from Mexico, Canada, Jamaica, East Carribean States, even Germany once. Oldest coin I ever found in my change is a 1929 Canadian penny, with King George V on it. Found George VI Canadian nickels and dimes too. Find a few wheat cents from time to time, once a 1937 S that I needed, in really nice condition, even had a little redness left. Most amazing thing I found is when I broke open a new nickel roll starting my shift as a cashier, and found a 1937 buffalo nickel, still in EF condition or so. About 15 years ago someone on my paper route gave me a 1990 American Eagle as if it was a dollar, not sure if he was unaware its intrinsic value was much higher than its face value or he was just being generous. I've managed do get both P & D SBA dollars from 1979, 1980, and 1999 from post office vending machines, as well as 2000 and 2001 Sacagawea dollars, about the only place I ever seem to find them (that and light rail ticket machines). Once got a $1 silver certificate in my change, about the only interesting thing I found in paper money.

    Interesting.

I am also from Colorado, and found a 50 Ore coin myself, also dated 2001.

    Go figure!

I've noticed that over the last 5 or 6 years, in the 3 places I've lived (Maryland, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania), that foreign coins are popping up more and more. That's particularly ironic as foreign travel is down.

Working as a cashier is a great thing to do to find coins... yesterday in the drawer found a 1956-D dime. Traded my 10c for it. It seems so rare to actually find silver in circulation that it was pretty exciting. Seems to be in pretty decent shape too, maybe AU 50 or so.

I also work as a cashier and I find good stuff from time to time. Silver in circulation is extremely rare and is probably there by accident. I usually get silver from people spending it. I found a 1964 silver dime which could have come from a roll. Another guy at work found a 1908 Indian Head Cent in a penny roll this week.

It's from Sweden ("Sverige" is Sweden, in Swedish). 100 ore = 1 kroner (or crown). 50 ore coins seem to show up in the US every once in a while as they're the same color and about the same dimensions as a penny; I've received one myself as change at a mall food court here in Colorado. Sounds like you have an older type; one I have has the 3 crowns on one side and 50 ore on the other.

    A friend gave me a shiny 1943 steel penny, a 1927 and 1935 buffalo nickel and a 1968-D Kennedy.

I pulled a worn out old Liberty Head Nickel from a box last night. I know that it's not worth much, but its still cool to find the oldies in circulation.

Pretty rare in circulation... the only way they'd get into circulation is if someone broke open a proof set and spent them (San Francisco hasn't minted nickels for circulation since 1970).

Suppose I should mention the two proof halves I found back in 2000 in Biloxi, MS... one out of a 50 cent slot machine at the Treasure Bay Casino, one in my change (well I saw it in the drawer, and specifically asked for it) at Taco Bell. One was a 1989 S, the other a 1971 S. Lost a bit of the proof luster but the details are nice and sharp, and no major marks on them. Pretty nice find, considering how bad a slot machine can beat up coins, glad I rescued them!

Have to admit I pulled out a 2005D dime myself that look very excellently struck, and put it in a 2x2. Sure it's only worth 10 cents now, but the only reson you can get 100 year old coins in mint state is because someone 100 years ago took it out of circulation and put it somewhere safe. Maybe in 2105 some acution listing will be listing "Just received from estate sale: 2005D Roosevelt dime, MS65, amazing luster! Looks like it was minted yesterday!"

Anyway a good looking coin is still a good looking coin, even if it's not worth a bit over face value (yet!).

A friend of mine gave me two silver Washington Quarters over the Thanksgiving break - a 1963-D and 1959-D. Apparently she had received them as payment for something from her job, and noticed that they "looked and sounded funky" to quote her. She knew I collect, and gave them to me! The '63 might get away with VF-20, and the '59 is a solid VG-8 (at least according to me and my ANA grading guide....).

Today found a 1940S Jefferson nickel, and a 1998 20 sen piece from Malaysia (mistaken for a quarter).
