Went to WalMart, City Market, and Safeway today, as well as other stores. Came home and dumped a small mountain of coins on the desk. Here's what I found. 1937 Buffalo Nickel, barely readable date. 1976 Bicentennial JFK 1920 Wheat Cent (Second of this date I have found in the last week.)
Mostly you have to ask your bank to order them for you when you want that many all at once. There is $500 FV in a box of halves (1000 coins).
3 half rolls from a bank near a work site I was at yielded: 2-1964's and 6-silver clad halves! Some days it pays to ask around. That day I stopped at 8 banks asking if they had any halves, new nickels, or large size dollars and those 3 rolls was all I found, but it was fun anyway.
Listening to Jim Puplava's interview with Matthew Simmons on his book Twilight in the Desert, and getting near the end of a pretty good bag of halves, wondering if there was anything left in there, when I found my very first ever 1970 Kennedy, an "S", that had slipped into circulation. Another moment to kick back and enjoy. Others in the bag: Franklin X 1 64 Kennedys X 4 65-69 Kennedys X 9 Willie (The ghost of)
I wouldn't say that this is a great find but within the last month numerous uncirculated Vermont-D's have shown up. By numerous I mean rolls and rolls. There every where in town. There are so many that I've hoarded another roll for the future.
I was waiting in line at the bank today and spotted a 40% silver Kennedy half in the teller's plastic change tray. I asked her if I could buy it and she started laughing. She wanted to know what was special about it and wondered how I could have spotted it from so far away- 6 feet tops. It was a decent 1969-D.
I always wanted to find something other then Kennedies in a half dollar roll, but never had any luck at all. Do you think the same bank that orders some halves for you will buy them back?
They might, but I don't recommend it. First, this annoys the bank and it is likely to lead to tellers being less willing to help you in the future. Second, that would increase the risk of getting the same coins back at a future time, and that is something I wouldn't want to risk.
I know they will- or at least in my case. They do it for me every week. One bank branch I use regularly is very, very cooperative and has always been great to me. They are they absolute best. Another branch of the same bank wasn't quite so excited about feeding my coin habit after a while. I got a little resistance from them after several months, but I was able to make an arrangement that keeps everyone reasonably happy. About 6 months ago I went through a period where I was finding lots of silver, sometimes 4, 5, even 6 coins per roll in say 3 or 4 out of every 10 or 15 rolls. I found several Frankilns, a couple of Walkers, several 1964s, etc. It was the best run I've ever had while searching Kennedys. All of the rolls were coming from the same bank branch. I'd pick up ten rolls, pull the keepers, toss the remainders into a mint bag, go back a day later, get fifteen more rolls, and so on. I wasn't taking the returns back regularly, and even when I did return them it was to a different bank altogether- a practice I've since ceased. I thought my play was safe and I kept my mouth shut- even the time I was handed a roll that had a silver coin on each end. This went on for a couple of weeks (wish it had been longer) until one day I went into the same bank branch to get 15 more rolls. The teller said she had to talk to a manager first. I got a bad feeling...... I stood there waiting for maybe 10 minutes while she spoke to this manager. Finally she returned to help me and said that she couldn't sell me any more rolls of halves because they needed to keep them for their commercial customers. I thought that was bogus, but really, what could I say? I asked to speak to the manager and was directed to the same person with whom the teller had just spoken. Without actually saying so the manager told me that I was going through too many halves. She wanted to start selling me boxes of $500 for a $20 processing/handling fee. I asked her how many rolls I could go through a week and still get them for free. She said 30 or 40, and I suggested 25. That is where things have been ever since. OK, once in a while I sneak in and get extras, but they are used to seeing me every Tuesday. I hand them a mint bag of exactly 500 coins (I replace what I pull with culls) and ask for 25 rolls in return. All seems well and I try not to rock the boat.
I searched 50 rolls of halves last night and got 5 silver coins: two '67s, two '68s and a 1949-D Franklin in about EF40. That was the first Franklin I'd found in probably 6 months. With the 1949-S I'd already found I just need a 1949-P to complete the set.
Well, after reading about the searching in rolls of halfs I decided to give it a whirl. I managed to pull a 69-d out of 4 rolls so I can't complain. With the rest I could fill a book P&D from 1971 straight through to 2000, except for the 1987's. All in all, fun Also, when I asked for any rolls of the new Oceans in view nickels, I got handed 5 rolls of keelboats. No complaints here
Oh today.... Thought it would be a good day when I got 2 Bison's in OK cdtn.. alittle dirty but OK.... and then on the way home (I bus) I stopped by the station, got a Bison in my change... So I asked him, "Hey, do you have any more nickels just like this one?".... In summation, I QUADRUPLED my Bison collection... He had almost a whole roll for me!
$20 FRN, Series 1981. Reagan Administration. And I would call it AU condition too. It was folded in half, but not a hard crease.
