Very pleased to find this countermark on the reverse when I cleaned the coin. I suppose it is a coin of Heraclius. aHer1Obv.jpg aHeraclianCountermark829.jpg

Hard to see at first, maybe Warren can shed light on it.

aBiggerCountermark.jpg An even bigger countermark on another Heraclius, purchased in a small town shop in Ontario.

I believe the first is a Heraclius countermark from mid-630s corresponding roughly to the time of Arab invasions in Syria. It is a recorded type...a monogram, I guess. Didn't bother to look it up, though...mostly just having fun with the bold look of it.
