Interesting coin of Livia ... but why do this to it?

Picked up this coin in a small lot a while back. An interesting type but who would even consider putting this very modern identification stamp on the obverse.

Livia; Restitution issue Ae Dupondius under Titus:

Obv: IVSTITIA; Bust right, a pitiful 7/36 counterstamp to right
Rev: IMP T CAES DIVI VESP F AVG REST around S C

IVSTITIA Stamped.jpg An interesting issue reduced to a valueless metal slug (at least to me). That being said if anyone wants it I will do a coin giveaway tonight. Just let me know.

I would keep it. Livia is hard to come by.

Looks like an old inventory number of a museum collection, curators usually use pencil marks in white or black ink.Its part of the coin's history now.

I agree with Andres2, the countermark wouldn't bother me.

That's what I thought except it obviously damages the coin so why would some curator do that?

It's actually a tough coin but that stamp makes it valueless to me.

The counterstamp doesn't detract from the coin...to my eyes.

I would not be bothered by the mark IF I knew whose mark it was. I would love to have a coin with the Gonzaga/d'Este stamp. I only have one coin with what I believe to be a modern stamp and I have no idea who is H or even if that is actually a Cyrillic N. Is the coin worthless because of it?

Hey Doug, I agree but not sure how or why any competent museum curator would ruin a coin with a modern stamp. It just seems counterintuitive.

Again, if anyone at all is interested in the coin just give me an "I'm in" post in this thread.

I think I would keep the coin . Firstly, Livia is rather rare and overall , your coin is quite appealing and attractive.
Secondly, I would look at that stamp as intriguing and mysterious. Who put it there? For what reason? When. To me the letters look like before the 20th century. See if another similar mark ever appears on the market.

I do admit I would prefer paint. I would never think of removing these numbers, but I paid less fr these coins than I would have had they been 'plain'. No one wants such damaged coins. No one but some strange friends I have pickup up along the way.

    Paint is definitely more preferable.
