I bought this rather inexpensively from a buddy. I know Morgan toning but this trade dollar is new to me and its strange pattern obverse. M1
There's very little chance of that toning being considered "natural" by any competent authority. That's not the real problem, though. The real problem is, this coin uses the Type 1 Reverse, which was last used in 1876. It does not appear on 1877 or later Trade Dollars. There's not a chance that this coin is authentic. There are other, smaller tells which an experienced hand in Trade Dollars would see as problematic, but the fact that it uses a reverse known not to be used in that year is sufficient.
