Jr, for starters this is what I have...not sure where some of the mint marks are on a few of these but here goes... 1911 Liberty V Nickel, 1904 Liberty V Nickel x2, 1905 Liberty V Nickel x3, 1906 Liberty V Nickel, 1911 Liberty V Nickel x2, 1912 Liberty V Nickel, 1907 Liberty V Nickel, 1902 Liberty V Nickel x3, 1908 Liberty V Nickel x3, 1910 Liberty V Nickel, 1903 Liberty V Nickel, 1927 Indian/Buffalo Nickel, 1945 Quarter, 1942 Mercury dime, 1936 Indian/Buffalo Nickel, and the last one for now...U.S. 1840 One Cent. I have a couple foreign coins, "REGINA FD ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA one penny 1963 has a knight with a pitchfork on the back, three of those; GEORGIVS VI D.G. BR OMN REX FD IND IMP. one penny 1946 also with a knight holding a pitchfork on the back. Last one for foreign so far is Republica De Costa Rica 1999 100 Colones B.C.C.R.
If it does turn out to be real, I would suggest that you still claim it is a fake. It is illegal to own that coin from that year unless it is the actual one that sold for $7.5million. The Secret Service will confiscate it. Read about it here: http://coins.about.com/od/famousrarecoinprofiles/p/1933_Gold_Eagle.htm Very interesting story.
Take it to a gold and silver buyer or jewelry store, they can test it to see if it's plated, which I believe it is as stated by JrCoin.
Well, took it to a coin shop...the guy says it's silver but gold plated and offered me a whole $5. Lol As for the shoe box of coins, have yet to do anything with them...they're sentimental but if there is ever one that may be worth anything, depending on it's value, I may sell it or keep it.
Any dollar, half, quarter, dime 1964 or earlier, and half dollars 65-71 contain silver, you can always search the lot and see if there is anything worth keeping, or sell the lot off for melt. Going rate right now is between 20-24x face value for the 90% silver coins 64 and before.
