Is it a thin or thick planchet? Just in case, if you don't have a scale in hand, The thick planchet was the original issue and the thin planchet was a later restrike (due to fluctuation in metal price). Regards Ballabh Garg
This is a well worn coin, and i had thought it to be originally a thick planchet worn thin. Now you are making me think again. Problem is, i've nothing to compare it with (?). KM doesn't provide weights for either variety. Do you know of any diagnostics for either?
Thanks. These coins have been lying dormant in my collection now for about ten years. At one time `India' was my thing but sadly, apart from a few coins from Portuguese India, I haven't added to that part of my collection at all of late. I'm now looking at my `regal' India collection and will make a start to scanning some `type' examples of these commencing with the 1/12th anna. Just looking at them again though reminds me of the intricacies of determining the mints and the variations within variations...for example, a small incuse `C' on a bead!!.... Almost enough to get me started collecting them again Ian
Aidan, Here is a 2 Pai coin from Hyderabad dated AH1368 And a 4 anna coin dated AH 1368 On a 2 Pai coin, the persian date is written on obverse just outside the inner hole. You can see the first two digits (i.e. 13) and last two digits (i.e. 68) at 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock respectively. The regnal year (i.e. 39)is visible on reverse at 11 o'clock just outside the centreal hole. Hope this will help you in identifying the dates on your coins. Regards Ballabh Garg
The original issue of Ratlam (Thick coin) is known with dates VS 1945 and VS 1948. The restrike issues (Thin and little crude) are only know with date VS 1947. The image you posted is with VS 1947 so it's very likely that it's a restike issue. But we never know and we may find one day a thick coin dated VS 1947. Hence, was my question to check about the planchet. Regards, Ballabh Garg
Ballabh,I shall be having a look at my Hyderabadi coins to look for the AH dates. Are there any regnal years on those holey 2 Pai coins at all? If there is,where is the regnal year located? Aidan.
So, statistically speaking, it looks very much like a restrike. Ian `If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...., it's a duck.'
Here I have circled the date as where they appear on the coin. In first image, the two circles are dates written in AH while the circle in second image shows the regnal year. Regards Ballabh Garg
I know this is a pretty old thread but found nothing else so here it goes. I came across this 1 paisa Ratlam coin which I don't know much about except denomination, state, and year. Would like to know if it's the restrike or the original, how can you tell the two, and anything else about it things like mintage, book/market value...etc. Thank you very much, sorry for poor picture alignment.
