I acquired this coin sometime in the 1960's from a dealer's foreign coin box. I examined it later and saw that it was a 1917 British India 1 Anna coin filed down to the size of a 1/4 Rupee coin. The filer even inserted edge reeding. As there were 16 annas to the rupee, this alteration quadrupled the value. The anna was then worth around 3¢ so the filer made a 9¢ profit.

I'm sorry, Sir. But it is not a numismatic shop but the thread about an Indian coins. It is not a good place for the trade. Regards. Eugene.

I had the privilege of being at Dr. David Fore's retirement party. My wife worked with him for 12 years. A really cool guy with a great taste in jazz too! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Apart from any collector value, an unworn one Rupee coin of 1920 (.917 fine silver) would have just over .34 ounce of silver content, or a bit less silver than a .900 fine US half dollar. As most half dollars circulating five years ago would have had no silver, you did well. Since you haven't mentioned the condition, the silver would be the minimum value. At about $19.50/oz silver it might be a bit over $6, depending on the amount of wear. I'll let other chime in on any collector value, but you might want to guess at the grade first.
NGC has a site which gives values for world coins. As you didn't indicate the mint, you might like to look over the data on the linked page: http://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/world/india-british-rupee-km-524-1912-1936-cuid-52938-duid-145553
Looking forward to it. You might like to provide photos as well. My suspicion is a value just over silver content.
i found it. no mint mark that i can find, nice brown toning, little wear on the reverse but a few dings and some wear on the obverse, on King George's shoulder and on the letters EM near the edge
There is no mint mark in the same way as US coins (D, S, CC etc.). Rather, like most of the period in which US coins were stuck - and Philadelphia coins had NO mark - there is no mint mark for Calcutta. The Bombay strikes have a small dot on the reverse under the ornate "wreath" near the bottom of the coin, just as shown in the coin posted by Jello. Only those two mints struck one Rupee coins in 1920, so I expect you will see the small dot on yours, if it is from Bombay. In terms of value, both mints had huge mintages, so I suspect there is little practical difference in scarcity or value. Although the page I gave you yesterday shows $30 as the value in VF, I suspect the value on Ebay might be more in the $10-15 range. You might search on completed auctions for similar coins to see how they ended up. Have fun, and I hope this helped.
Just bought these two at a flea market, two shots of the front of the 50 rupee to show the mirror finish (you can see me taking the pic).
Nice Gems 1974 commemorative rupees set. Are there silver hallmarks anywhere or are the german nickel silver ?
