I have a few Indian coins, notably five double rupees of Mysore of Tipu Sultan. I've always admired these beautiful coins, with their ornate calligraphy and size. Additionally, there is a lot of history behind these coins, produced when Tipu Sultan was fighting the British, in the form of the East Indian Company, for control of southern India, a war that he ultimately lost. I purchased the coins over a period of about ten years, back in the 1980s, when they were more available, and the Indian home market was not as strong as it is today. I've photographed one so far. Tipu Sultan, AM 1216 2 rupees Patan C 127 22.7 grams Staying with Mysore as a native state, here is a later AE 20 cash, 1810-1833, under the British Raj. 9.04 grams
Thanks I really like the elephant on the your 20 cash! I am hoping to get around an photograph the other four double rupees for a thread on Tipu Sultan and the war with the British near the end of the 18'th century.
