Thanks for pointing out zeno.com It looks like a great resource. Galle is a very interesting place. You can see and feel the portuguese and dutch influence. It's was easy to imagine it as a bustling ancient port. There definitely was a bit of buzz around galle about the VOC coins and bonk bars, it was very early days for me as far as coin collecting but if I was to return I would make the most of that fact.
I spent a few weeks in Colombo, would you believe, in 1974. I was working on an old tramp steamer and we hauled a load of "handshaking" cargo there from Seattle. That means it was a gift from the people of the USA, free food aid. I bought my first VOC duit there, in some small and dusty shop. Also picked up a Chola massa. I was very much a neophyte at numismatics then, and now wish I had bought a LOT more.
I have never seen any EIC coin with a Buddha on one side. Wonder if it is regular issue or a temple token? Here is one of my half annas, 1835, Bombay mint.
OK, I did some research and now feel pretty sure that both of those "EIC" coins with Buddha images pictured above are temple tokens or medals. Below is a Hindu temple piece with Hanuman (Monkey God) shown on the first image, beneath the dais. The final image is a Sikh Temple token. All bear fictitious dates.
Just came today, Gujarat Sultans, AH 837, AE falus, Ahmad Shah I, 1411-1442 AD. Shame it was struck by a hoe or shovel on the left hand image. I must agree with Siberian Man about the EIC half anna with Buddha image. It is a temple token/medal which borrowed the reverse of an EIC half anna. Probably was cast.
Oh, sorry, I thought this was the uno thread. Here is a new India coin that came today. ID is tentative for now. Mughal, Akbar, AD1556-1605, Ahmadabad, AE dam, AH982
