I have really become hooked on Indian coins. Not only the ancient ones from the many, many states, kingdoms and sultanates, also the British Empire coins.
@coin_nut I just brought home three beautiful rupees this afternoon. Two Victorias and one William IV. All three are beautiful and uncirculated. I’ll take some photos and share tomorrow.
Wow, major score! I will find a few of my colonial India coins to share with you all...Dutch, French, Portuguese. I really like that Danish coin above from Muzyck. I want one of those.
I have to admit, that is one of the prettiest coins I have bought lately - And with a good, clear date, big plus.
My sister found this in a flip while cleaning out her mom's house in 2018. Not a collector of these but who doesn't like gold, especially in AU. I included the labels describing the additional info I found about the coin. Some of the info might be incorrect, but I tried to be as accurate as possible when doing the research for the label. Part of my research involved inquiring on another forum before I joined CT and hope it is ok to include the link here for people that are interested. (I sold it this summer for her to a local coin shop. I saw this thread this am and thought you all might enjoy this one!!)
1927 B 1/4 anna. Somehow I bought 3 of these in one week recently. All in near perfect UNC condition.
Since I'm not a collector of coins from India, I can't tell if there is an inkling of doubt as to authenticity, a question about the coin, the characters, or something else? I'm not familiar with the series, so I was hesitant to share but just thought others might enjoy it. (I didn't have time to look through the entire thread so my apologies if one has already been posted.)
No problem Cliff. We all have our particular areas of interest. Many folks are only interested in ancient Roman or Greek coins. So many Americans only think about US coins. Some of us, like to collect any and every thing that tickles our fancy. For several years now, I have been into Indian coins, mainly because there is such an endless variety and they almost all are semi-UFO in lingo, etc. Fortunately, I found zeno.ru and have been able to attribute most of them. A big plus is that I keep learning more world history, centered in Asia.
Thanks and glad to hear you were able to attribute most of yours. I tend to be OCD on Lincoln varieties and errors lately but like to share when I have something to contribute. India does seem to have lots of error coins used on Error-ref.com.
Silver rupee_ aurangzeb (1618-1707) I think? weight 10grams 23.5 mm diameter. I brought this from a local dealer in galle, Sri Lanka. Payed $50 usd at the time and it spurred an interest in coins, which for me is priceless. Seems to have a test cut which adds to it for me. Thanks. Sorry for the poor quality images
Nice! I hear Galle is a beautiful place, and perhaps a good place to score some VOC dumps, such as the one pictured below. Here is a link to an AH1111 Aurangzeb AR Rupee which looks similar to yours. I can highly recommend zeno.com for attributing your old Indian coins. https://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=277819
