as part of a lifetime challenge to myself i have assembled a higher grade morgan silver dollar collection i only lack the 1885cc, 1893s,and of course 1895p my problem being i can't convince myself to pull the trigger on at least the 85cc or 93s as these coins in third party slabs will cost 900.00 and 2500.00 respectfully will the cost offset the value of the collection right now my total investment is at 8600.00 for the 95 coins i do have at least 50% ms grade plus 14 slabbed dates i have a completed one a year morgan plus mint marks 33 coins that i considering selling to fund the purchases i look forward to your advise
Considering the advice I have seen here to people wanting to sell completed sets of coins is to remove the "key" coins and sell them separately and sell the rest as a partly completed set. It wouldn't make sense to complete your set and then break it up to sell it as a partial set. Let's see what others have to say.
Are you asking if buying the remaining coins will be profitable due to now having a complete set? As in they will increase the value of the set as a whole more than what you pay for them? If so then no. Only buy them if you want them in your collection, don't buy them hoping it will be a profitable venture because 1. Not many people are looking to buy an entire set to begin with and 2. Those that are will only pay an amount based on the sum of the parts of the set. IMO
It's not a race. Keep the coins you have and add the others as funds permit. If it takes years to get the key coins, that's okay in my opinion. Good Luck!
Sometimes waiting can be detrimental to the collection especially if these coins Don't come up everyday, never put off till tomorrow what you can get done today !
It would be ok to sell off the common dates one by one to fund the 93-S purchase as long as it's a very nice example. You can easily replace the commons.
The 85-cc is a very common coin in any cond. and it's price remains stable over time and will always be an easy pick-up. The 93-s is also plentiful in lower grades, but a nicer one than VG will cost you a bit more than $2500. I would shop the market for the nicest one for the price on both of these dates.
