Yes i've had that quite a bit. Guineas can do that to you. One piece of advice for you medieval gold, leave it well alone. It's for your own good, cos if you ever get any of that you'll never look at a gold coin the same way again! I love guineas though, the ornamental shield ones (like yours) are the best! The later Spade ones might have been more popular with collectors in the past but they just ain't the same.
Here's a couple of guineas. Queen Anne (coin rotation) dated 1714, and Georgie Porgy's spade guinea (medal rotation) dated 1791. Must confess, although I have these other than the fact that they are nice chunks of gold, i'm not particularly taken by them.
I like the spade reverse. That is my next search, I think... well, in a few months anyway. I used up my coin allowance for a while to pick up this one. So it's either that or liquidate some of my stuff. I have some victorian sovereigns that I guess I could part with, but I like those too. I think I'd also like to find a 2 escudo in a similar year. That would be a neat pair.
If you can look at the coin all day with joy then I think you got yourself one heck of a deal. As for the question about a league of its own, I guess you now have a league of its own collection as well. Hope you have the chance to add to it at least one time a year as you build your other wonderful collection which I have seen on your site.
I like the Queen Anne! Not often you see gold from that reign. I love gold, silver and tin coins from this period (i.e Early Milled) it's a real selling point with me. The whole 1816 thing kills it for me though, my interest comes down with a bang at the recoinage.
Rick, Did I mention that I hate you?...LOL just kidding, good buy buddy!! Have you figured out what part of the other die that is on his cheek? part of a lion maybe?
definitely part of the fleur-de-lis. The one toward the cheek is almost complete, and there is also evidence of another partial. When I purchased the coin, I thought the line under the eye might have been a distracting scratch, but it turned out to be the border of the reverse.
Queen Anne gold. Sylvester, what Queen Anne gold coins have you ever had? Are they pre-Union (English),or are they post-Union (British)? I have a few Queen Anne Maundy coins, mostly 3d.'s & Groats (4d.). Have you ever had the 1/6 & 3/- pieces, which were struck between 1811 & 1816? I have a couple of 1/6's, but one is holed,& the other has 2 counterstamps.I have never been offered a British 3/- piece, but I did get the Jersey 3/- piece, which is far rarer,a few years ago.I still have this coin. Aidan.
I have an 1811 3 shillings bank token. I picked this piece up at a show in wichita a couple weeks back. The scan doesn't capture it as well as I would have liked. The toning on it is truly a beautiful blue hue.
I love these gold coins that you all have! What books can you all recommend to me to learn more about these? Also, do any of you know any good dealers that might deal in slabbed examples of some of these coins?
tcore, you might try northeastnumismatics.com. At least, I think that's the address. The prices are a little high for me, but he deals in very high grade examples, and I think all his inventory is slabbed. He usually has a guinea or two in his stock - but like I said, they are usually out of my price reach. As for books, There's a Krause Mishler reference for world gold coins - the standard catalog of world gold coins, but that might not be the sort of material you are looking for... If you wanted in depth information on guineas, I'm sure there are good references out there, I just don't know them.
Well Rick from a" Lightsider" who travels to the Darkside ever so often...that is a fine piece and I would be proud to own it myself! Congrats on the pickup...just remember my name is spelled like this..(for your will) RickieB!! hahahahah After all we have the same first name!:high5: RickieB
Talking of guinea gold coins i'm in a bit of a predicament here (a nice predicament to be in i suppose but frustrating). I know where there's a nice George I Quarter Guinea that i could buy, unfortunately there's also a nicish Lincoln mint Stephen penny up for sale too. So do i go for the gold or the medieval? Then again i could finally buy that nice boxed set of periodic elements i've always wanted (minus the radioactive things), for my rock collection. So it's kinda rock/hard place. Ideally i'd have all three. But you know... (The quarter guinea is the cheapest, the Stephen's middling, the other's alot more)
You should first let me know what the Stephen coin is like. If it's a decent portrait, and a decent price, you should put me in touch with the seller and settle on going for the George I 1/4 guinea. Ian `solution provider'
I know i nearly bought the Stephen last time. Dark grey tone (a tad darker than pencil lead). Watford type nice struck reverse all four of the cross fleurs are viewable, portrait is fairly nice too. Price was £450. I'm really considering splashing out as you know how i feel about these things. The Lincoln mint really did it for me seeing as Lincoln would come to haunt Stephen for many years. Even though it's a common mint.
Ouch! £450 is a bit on the heavy side for my budget at the moment. Been too busy buying up other items on my `must have' list. Good luck with resolving your dilema
Sylvester & Ian,you'll be pleased to know that I have got a holed example of the 1718 King George I 1/4 Guinea (5/3),plus I remembered I do also have a 1687 Maundy 3d. with a planchet fault on the reverse. So I have got 3 coins of King James II of England (King James VII of Scotland) in my collection. Aidan.
